Busy hands.....

distaff and spindle

Scripture:
Proverbs 31:19 ~
She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. KJV
In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. NIV
Her hands are busy spinning thread, her fingers twisting fiber. NLT

Observation:
ESV Study Bible ~
A distaff is a staff with a fork at the end that holds flax or wool that has yet to be spun, from which thread is drawn when a person is spinning thread or yarn on a spinning wheel. A spindle is a rod with tapered ends on which thread is wound once it has been spun by hand. The point of this and several other verses is the remarkable range of manual, commercial, administrative, and interpersonal skills at which this woman demonstrates excellence.

Clark's Commentary on the Bible ~
She gives an example of skill and industry to her household. She takes the distaff, that on which the wool or flax was rolled; and the spindle, that by twisting of which she twisted the thread with the right hand, while she held the distaff in the guard of the left arm, and drew down the thread with the fingers of the left hand.

Wesley's Notes ~
By her own example she provokes her servants to labour.

Application:
One Minute Bible - Women of Character ~
"Let's face it . We'll never get to read all the books we want, or go on all the long walks we want, or watch every old rerun we want. And we already know why - because we've got work to do. And since that's the case, we can either keep our minds on what we're missing, adding even more weight to the work in front of us, or we can keep our heads in what we're doing - finding joy in simple things, seeing opportunity in ordinary tasks, discovering a new side of God in our mundane moments."

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, help me to find joy in whatever task I may be doing. Whether a task is great or small I want to do it all for your glory. Procrastination is an easy snare for me. Therefore, help me to be industrious like the Proverbs 31 woman. I don't want to put off until tomorrow what I could do today. In Jesus name, amen.
