A Wise and Just King

Proverbs 31: 5-6

Scripture:
For they will drink and forget what is decreed,
And pervert the rights of all the afflicted.
Give strong drink to him who is perishing,
And wine to him whose life is bitter.

Observation:
Proverbs 20:1 - Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise. Proverbs 23:29-35 - Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who tarry long over wine; those who go to try mixed wine. Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly. In the end it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder. Your eyes will see strange things, and your heart utter perverse things. You will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, like one who lies on the top of a mast. “They struck me,” you will say,“but I was not hurt; they beat me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake? I must have another drink.”

Application:
From Matthew Henry' s Commentary - "All Christians are made to our God kings and priests, and must apply this to themselves. It is not for Christians, it is not for Christians, to drink to excess; they debase themselves if they do; it ill becomes the heirs of the kingdom and the spiritual priests..."

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, help me to remember that I am part of a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of God's own possession so that I may proclaim the excellencies of you who has called me out of darkness into your marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9). I want to follow the LORD my God and fear you; I want to keep your commandments, listen to your voice, and serve you, and cling to you (Deuteronomy 13:4). In Jesus name, amen.
