Ruth Meets Boaz

Ruth 2:1-16

Yesterday, I introduced the concept of God's sovereignty in our lives. According to Romans 8:28, God works all things for our good. In Psalm 139:16 NKJV - Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them. God was working in the lives of Naomi and Ruth. He had a plan for them although they might not have been able to see it.

At the beginning of chapter 2, Boaz is introduced as a kinsman of Naomi. He was a mighty man of wealth from the family (clan) of Elimelech. In verse 2, Ruth asks Naomi for permission to go glean in the field of him in whose sight she would find GRACE. Naomi tells her to go.

In verse 3 it seems as if it was by pure "luck" or "happenstance" that Ruth came upon the field of Boaz. In God's economy there is no such thing as luck. Everything is done through God's sovereignty. It's kind of tongue and cheek. What may seem like luck is really the GRACE you are receiving from God who favors you [God Behind the Seen, page 44].

Boaz showed GRACE in many ways:
  • Told Ruth not to glean in any other field
  • Gave Ruth protection from his hired men
  • Ruth should drink from the vessels provided
  • Ruth should eat the bread provided at mealtime
  • Told the reapers to leave handfuls on purpose for Ruth to glean
Ruth is surprised at this GRACE. She asked Boaz "Why have I found GRACE in your sight?" The question of the ages. Why would God favor me? What did I do to earn such favor? In God Behind the Seen, pages 52-53 it states, "This question cuts across the grain of proud humanity, ever ready to take credit for any recognition, accomplishments or successes that occur in the vicinity." Basically we want to take the credit. When in reality all credit belongs to God and His GRACE. We need to put our faith in Him who shows us such marvelous GRACE.

GRACE simply defined is “non-meritorious or unearned favor, an unearned gift, a favor or blessings bestowed as a gift, freely and never as merit for work performed.” Grace is all that God freely and non-meritoriously does for man and is free to do for man on the basis of Christ’s person and work on the cross. GRACE, one might say, is the work of God for man and encompasses everything we receive from God.- Bible.org

GRACE truly is amazing!
