The Tower of Babel
Man plans his way...
The people wanted to make a name for themselves and be great.
Isn't that human nature?
We want to be noticed.
We want to be remembered.
Unfortunately, sometimes we go about it in the wrong way.
We rely on our own plans and schemes to fulfill our ego and our pride rather than relying on the Lord.
That's what the people of Babel did.
They attempted to take their destiny into their own hands and by their own self-centered efforts they wanted to displace and exclude God ( See NIV Study Bible note Genesis 11:6)
Man planned his way but the Lord directed their steps. (Proverbs 16:9)
The things they did not want to happen, happened.
The Lord stopped their building, confused their languages, and scattered them.
James, the Lord's brother, reminds us not to boast and make our own plans.
Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.
James 4:13-16 NIV
May we remember to ask the Lord to direct our steps and give us desires to please Him...
"The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives."
Psalm 37:23 NLT

NIV Quiet Time Bible Questions:
- What action do the people of Babel take, and what is their motive (11:1-9)?
- It is amusing that the Lord must come down (11:5) to see this tower that will reach to the heavens. What is his reaction (11:5-9)?
- Genesis 11:10-32 traces the line from Shem to Abraham. Why do you think the author is beginning to shift from all the families of the earth to one family?
