Advent is on its way....
Next Sunday begins the season to remember that a Child is born to us and that a Son is given. A time to reflect on all that God has done for us by sending His Son to take on flesh and dwell among us. He is our Redeemer, Savior and Lord.
There are many ways to prepare for the season. One is to set up an Advent wreath like the one pictured. The candles have various significance as follows:
First Candle:
Color: Purple
Theme: Hope
First Sunday in Advent
Second Candle"
Color: Purple
Theme: Love
Second Sunday in Advent
Third Candle:
Color:Pink
Theme: Joy
Third Sunday in Advent
Fourth Candle:
Color: Purple
Theme: Peace
Fourth Sunday in Advent
Optional Center Candle:
Color: White
Theme: Christmas
Christmas Day
Other ways to prepare are reading devotionals to keep one's thoughts focused on Jesus the real reason for the season. Here are a few recommendations:

This is a devotional by Paula Whidden. It includes short readings, Bible verses, and activities to do together. It can be purchased here for $2.99 or free for prime members.
Angela and Courtney over at Good Morning Girls are offering a free Advent study for blog subscribers. I've done several of their studies. They are fantastic. Info on how to obtain your free study and bookmark can be found here. The study actually begins today.
There is also the option of spending time in the Gospels. I love this book. It takes the reader through all four Gospels in chronological order. See the unfolding of God's plan just as it happened. It is available here.
This season is about Jesus. It is not about the presents, the tree, and all the other things we tend to set our minds on. These are just a few ideas to set our minds on what Christmas is all about - Jesus.
If you have any ideas for the Advent season, please share. I'd love to read what others are doing in preparation to celebrate Jesus' birth.
Hi There, Regina!
ReplyDeleteI love this post- truly a favorite time of the year! That last one looks great and I downloaded the 25 Days read on my Kindle for free and was checking it out (I think you shared it when it was offered free). I am very happy to in my hands the book God in the Manger - Reflections on Advent and Christmas by Dietrich Bonhoeffer and look forward to doing that this year. I love the ADvent Candles and devotions. Very nice share and good timing!
