Words - The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Scripture:
Ephesians 4:29 ~
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. KJV

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. NIV

Don't use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. NLT

1 Timothy 3:11 ~
Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. KJV

In the same way, their wives are to be women worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything. NIV

In the same way, their wives must be respected and must not slander others. They must exercise self-control and be faithful in everything they do. NLT

Proverbs 15:1 ~
A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. KJV

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. NIV

A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare. NLT

Observation:
ESV Study Bible ~
Christians are to stop evil speech, substituting talk that is good for building up and giving grace. “Corrupting” (Gk. sapros) also applies to “bad” (rotten) fruit (Luke 6:43) or “bad” (putrid) fish (Matt. 13:48). To “give grace” in speaking means to benefit others rather than corrupt them through what is said.

NIV Study Bible ~
Christians not only stop saying unwholesome things, they also begin to say things that will build others up.

Application:
Words have the power to harm or to heal. Words are a reflection of the heart for what one says flows from what is in their heart. Philippians 4:8 - what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and worthy of praise - would be a good place to start to keep our words on the right track.

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, help me to use my words for good and not evil. I want my words to build others up. I can only do this with your help.Help me to keep my focus on you and your word. In Jesus name, amen.
